Technical Details

As mentioned before the bandsaw we use is to the highest specification. Within this series of Wood Mizer mills there are many models each with its own throughput level. The attributes below enable our mill to achieve the highest throughput of its series ensuring you get excellent value from your sawing day.

42 HP Diesel Engine

This engine is 1500 cc and is the most powerful available. It is turbo charged and provides an awesome amount of power and exceptional reliability.

Hydraulic System - Super Series Mill

This model of saw has twin hydraulic pumps enabling the hydraulics to operate at double the speed of the non Super series mill. The functions are, log loading, clamping, turning and heel and toe adjustments.

Accuset

The mill utilises a digital programmable measuring system which enables the sawyer to move the blade up or down a programmed amount each time allowing for the thickness of the blade. This enables extremely swift repositioning of the saw blade at the start of each cut ensuring that the mill consistently achieves the highest throughputs.  This system also ensures the boards are the same thickness. This consistency of thickness is a

real boon when it comes to thicknessing  a large number of boards as any machinist will tell you!

De-barker

Considerable blade wear is caused by the bark or objects secreted in the bark. A major in- road to preventing this premature dulling is the de- barker. The de- barker uses a small tipped circular saw blade to remove the bark just in front of where the band saw blade enters the timber. As the blade can still hit stones on the exit side of the timber it is still prudent to ensure the logs are as clean as possible prior to sawing.

Prep for a sawing day:

Within the realms of safe operation of the saw and whilst ensuring high quality standards, we want to ensure you get the maximum amount of timber processed in the shortest possible time. To achieve this there are a few things to consider prior to the sawing day.

Preparing Your Logs

Check the timbers for stones and any metal. If the logs are very muddy clean them as much as practicable to ensure they are free of foreign objects. Trim the ends of the butts flat and prior to the sawing day, paint them with a suitable paint to prevent the ends of the milled timber from drying out too quickly. External grade masonary paint is good for this. If you fell trees every year consider using a different coloured paint for each year. It will help you keep track of the drying process.

If you have the use of a fork lift consider stacking all wood straight onto pallets. Sticks can be cut on the day from waste timber which means the drying piles can be created immedialtely thus avoiding manual handling as much as possible.  If the timber is to be removed from site immediately have a trailer ready so that the milled timber or waste can be loaded on as it comes off the saw.

Loading and Unloading

The most cost effective approach is the keep the sawmill operating as much as possible. This means having timbers cleaned, checked for stones, lined up and ready to load onto the sawmill. Similarly, when the timber on the bed has been sawn, be ready to off load it as soon as possible and then load the next timber. A fit and well focused handling team is they key to an efficient sawing day.

Work Area

Take a little time to think about where the saw will be sited. The saw needs to be reasonably level across the axle with sufficient access for a machine to load from one side. If you wish to save the sawdust get hold of some large grab bags as used by builders merchants. If you wish to keep the area clean where the sawing is to take place eg a gravel drive consider using tarpaulins.
